Clueless, Party of One, Your Square is Ready!

Ever wonder what'd happen if someone who'd never square danced before tried to drop into a square?  Well, now I know.

Imagine a square with a mix of (Plus or higher) dancers and relatively new students in the back of our very large dance space.  Picture one of the more clueless class members inviting his girlfriend/coworker/random-person-off-the-street to grab a spot in the square.  Add that the class is about halfway through the Mainstream list and that, as is often true, the less accomplished dancers/class members are hiding out in the back squares.  Note that the girlfriend/coworker/random-person-off-the-street had never square danced.  Ever (even though she told folks at the front desk that she had).  The music starts and...

Chaos

Andy, our unflappable caller catches sight of the disaster, stops the squares, puts everybody back home.  The music starts and...

Chaos

Andy stops the squares, asks what happened, and gets a "jeez, I have no idea!" from one of the better dancers in the square.  Shrugged shoulders.  The music starts again and...

Chaos

This time Club Prez (and aspiring caller) Richard has seen enough to realize that girlfriend/coworker/random-person-off-the-street has been wandering aimlessly around the square, giggling and thinking the whole thing was hilarious.  He asks her "have you ever square danced before?"  She answers "oh (giggle) square dance? (giggle) um, no (giggle)".  While Richard quickly explains why she can't just drop in, foreheads are slapped and eyes are rolled throughout the room.  She amicably leaves the square (still giggling), takes a seat, whips out a camera and starts snapping pics of her class-member-boyfriend/coworker/person-not-quite-off-the-street and the (now less struggling) dancers and students, a vacuous smile on her face.

Wow.
