Interesting Times
Aug. 13th, 2004 11:27 amI'm still stunned by yesterday's happenings. While I'd hoped that the State Supreme Court would validate Newson's bold move to legalize gay marriage in one leap, in my heart I knew that such things don't happen in the real world. More stunning was the announcement to void the 4,037 marriages that were performed (I know several of these couples and my heart goes out to them). How can the loving bonds between two gay individuals be any less sacred than those between a man and a woman? I can only pray that when the cases questioning the legality of California's marriage laws get to the courts in September, they will make gay marriage a reality and not a whim.
Even more stunning is the resignation of New Jersey's governor because of a gay affair. Why is this man resigning his post? For fear of political retribution? That would seem to be guaranteed whether or not McGreevey went public. For fear of having the affair go public through some other avenue? That would seem to have been neatly dealt with by McGreevey's announcement. Because he fears for impact this all has on the position of governor? No, I don't think so! I'm left with one unavoidable conclusion - the man is ashamed of his gayness. In today's world, that's difficult to believe but perhaps all too human. How is his affair any different from the famous Clinton/Lewinsky blue dress incident? Frightening, disappointing, and, frankly, scary.
