Another year, another Stumptown Stomp has come and gone. A different feel this year as I'm no longer a local and needed to do as the event name implies - fly in. Partner (no, not that kind of partner) in crime on the trip was my buddy John, also a former SFer, who was attending his first fly in. Having some time to kill after landing in SF and while waiting for Richard (no longer on LJ), we wandered the Castro. It took no more than 30 minutes in town to run into the always handsome enhydrasf who was
trolling for men out getting lunch. After abusing (at least verbally) Josh for not attending Stumptown, Richard arrived and we shared stories of fire ants and conventions over lunch. On the road to Guerneville before 1PM in our rental Hyundai (an amazing rolling display of Reynolds Wrap and cardboard), we made the trip with few traffic delays.
This being the 25th anniversary of Stumptown, attendance was up a bit. Capital City Squares celebrated its first quarter century by bringing in two of the most popular callers around, both from outside the US - Canada's Anne Uebelacker and New Jersey's Mike Jacobs (yeah, OK, NJ is one of the 50 states but they do speak a foreign tongue, I lived there for six years). Cap City runs a great event but always seems to have a couple of hiccups. This year the registration packets were taken by aliens or something. Unlocking both of the dance venues after the Saturday evening banquet also seemed to stump the Stumptowners.
Lots of Bay Area dancers, most of whom I knew (so many in fact that I'm not going to attempt a listing). I'm always impressed by the feeling of 'family' from my fellow cult members. And how were the dancers and the dancing? Overall, pretty darn good with a few notable exceptions. I stumbled my way around the Advanced floor crashing squares whenever possible. A highlight was fuzzygruf's "Nice Pair" styling which tickled Anne throughout the weekend. Friday was a bit warm but it cooled just enough to make it near perfect for dancing. Good, good times.
The sole bizarre note was a survey regarding the future of Stumptown. While the stated intent of the survey was to address the issue of rising costs, I began to wonder if there were other reasons, perhaps the event organizer's frustration with the few complaints they've received. Regardless, the proposal to move the event to Tahoe or some other location failed to gain any traction with the attendees. We'll be back at the River next year.
By the end of the weekend, I was tired, aching, and very happy I came. It's only a month or so to the Denver convention when we get to do it all over again. Ben Gay anyone?
