A couple of days ago, the ever handsome (and one year older) [livejournal.com profile] dr_scott posted regarding a Six Feet Under episode.  Featured is the singing of Nessum Dorma from Puccini's opera, Turandot.  As coincidence would have it, later that day, our local classical radio station commented about a You Tube clip of that same piece, which piqued my curiosity.  You Tube yielded this clip of a performance by Paul Potts on the British equivalent of American Idol.  Potts, a mobile phone salesman and an unknown, has a spectacular singing voice and was ultimately voted the winner of the competition.

Now I'm not a big fan of opera. But if this piece and performance don't make you take a deep breath, you have no soul!

He has a wonderful voice and now I'm sure he will have a great career, but sadly it isn't the Cinderella story we were all lead to believe.

He trained for opera in Italy, taking time away from his paid job as a local politician! (The electorate were unamused, and he wasn't re-elected). He has sung in opera houses and showcase performances around Europe.

Somehow, the only biographic detail that made it to the reality show was that he is now a mobile phone salesman; and apparently he's spending the cash prize having his teeth fixed. Good call I'd say.

Interesting and educational background info, thanks! From my cynic's eye view of the universe, it doesn't surprise me that Potts is more accomplished than on 'reality TV'. Without taking away any of the electricity of his performance, it seemed clear to me that this wasn't his first time on stage by any means.
