Don't

I just learned that a good friend of mine was picked up for DUI this past Saturday.  He's a good guy, social drinker, more than smart enough to know when he's had too much.

But he didn't.

Having just looked at some web information on the penalties for drunk driving all I can say is...

Don't.

If I don't have a commercial license with the necessary endorsements, I don't have a job. That's one reason I rarely drink these days. It isn't worth loosing my job after 27 years.

I always take a police escort... and make them drive!

Just a suggestion... I wouldn't mention the police escort during your Naturalization ceremonies. People might be envious!

I've always been very aware of DUI. I so rarely drive when I've been drinking, and if I am drinking, it's usually 2 drink max. You can't afford the fines, the time away from family/work and the other penalties.

Hawaii announced it had the highest DUI accidents in the USA. Combine that with highways that are for the most part single lanes with NO illumination (because of all the stuff on Mauna Kea), it's no wonder were #1.

Every day the local Island newspaper publishes every "crime" that resulted in an arrest. It includes the name of the offender, location, crime etc. It can be a whole page length. I'll have to post it on my journal. It is really amazing.

The sad realization of this is that my buddy is not all that different from any of us. He doesn't have a drinking problem, would never want to put his life (or anyone else's) at risk, and I'm sure is saddened any time he reads about DUI related accidents. It's probably as simple as having had one too many and not realizing that he'd gone over the legal limit. This is definitely one of those areas where it pays to err on the side of caution.

Oy! Those boys are really out right now. A couple of my clients got them this year. Before 2007, the DUI was on your record for 8 years. Now it's on your record for 10 years. And there's only a couple of companies that will write auto insurance. Not to mention he can't get a very high Excess Liability policy, too.

Oy. Poor guy.

Everyone, if you're going to drive simply don't drink. Period!

Oy, indeed!

What struck me about this was how much my buddy is like you or me. Just looking to have a good time, not a career drinker, and now he's going to have to pay a hefty price.
